Zak Whitbread hit a stunning winner as Millwall finally ended their awayday hoodoo with a magnificent victory at table-topping Leyton Orient.
The Lions went into action having failed to record a league success on their travels since a 2-0 success at Doncaster Rovers on 9th April - and what better place to end that miserable run than at joint leaders Orient.
In a pulsating derby, Kenny Jackett's side had a lucky let-off with just 93 seconds on the clock when livewire Adam Barcham broke clear on the right and with the goal at his mercy, screwed his shot wide of the left-hand post.
That early scare drew an immediate response from The Lions with Neil Harris firing straight at keeper Glenn Morris from 12 yards on three minutes before Will Hoskins drilled a ball across goal and a yard away from strike partner Gary Alexander, who was rushing in at the far post.
Millwall certainly enjoyed all the early pressure and finally got the goal their play deserved after nine minutes. Paul Terry was lucky to escape a yellow card for an ugly lunge on Harris. But The O's were suitably punished when Bryan Hodge's resulting free-kick was teed up by Ali Fuseini for Whitbread, and the defender duly controlled the ball before lashing an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner.
Another Hodge delivery, this time from a 13th-minute corner, picked out skipper Paul Robinson, whose header was held by Morris.
Robbo showed his defensive prowess at the other end 10 minutes later with a superb block tackle to divert Barcham's goalbound shot for a corner.
But it was the visitors who continued to boss proceedings and a great move involving Ahmet Brkovic and Harris saw the latter's cross pick out Alexander, only for his bullet header to flash narrowly wide.
Barcham, whose pace was a constant threat, was again denied by a magnificent Whitbread block as The O's tried to find a way through in the dying minutes of the first-half.
Millwall dealt with a brief spell of pressure from Martin Ling's promotion-chasers immediately after the restart, with Barcham's rasping drive on 51 minutes flashing wide of the post.
Shortly after a poor pass by the otherwise impeccable Fuseini played Marcus Bignot into trouble, but the left-back recovered superbly to avert the danger.
Jackett's side, roared on by a travelling army of 1,568 fans, made it impossble for The O's to really settle into their stride and the introduction of Jay Simpson for the tireless working Harris added fresh impetus up front.
In fact the teenage striker could have added a second goal within three minutes of entering the fray when Fuseini slipped the ball through to him, but his final shot was held.
Millwall should have been awarded a 76th-minute penalty when Alexander was wrestled to the ground by Tamika Mkanawire, but referee Andy Penn waved play on.
Visiting keeper Pidgeley could count himself unlucky to be booked for time-wasting 80 seconds later when he merely re-positioned the ball for a free-kick after the wind had blown it a foot sideways.
When he did take the kick it set up Fuseini, who again played inSimpson. This time the latter fired over the bar.
And in the dying seconds speedy Simpson came agonisingly close to what would have been a goal of the season contender, weaving his way past four O's players in a run from deep inside his own half.
Having done all the hard work and with just keeper Morris standing between him and a sensational goal, Simpson's shot was just that bit too close to the keeper, who managed to parry it for a corner.
Despite another four minutes of injury-time, Millwall were simply not going to let three precious points slip and the final whistle was not only met by an ecstatic response from the travelling fans, but satisfaction that The Lions had also kept their first clean sheet in 12 games too.
