Lionesses clinch second spot
Millwall Lionesses record their highest finish in seven years after beating Keynsham Town 2-0 in the FA Tesco Women's Premier League.
The Lionesses required no motivation for this fixture, knowing a victory for them coupled with a slip up by Barnet against Newquay would secure second place.
Pru Buckley's side set the tempo from the off and in the first minute some smart play by striking duo Angela Kiobel and Nancy Osuji saw the latter's shot superbly saved by Keynsham keeper Linette Newton.
The home side were forced to make a change after just five minutes when defender Lorna Gover sustained a facial injury following an accidental clash of heads.
Millwall regrouped and nearly opened the scoring soon after when Carly Eagles made a terrific run from midfield, latched onto a Victoria Boardman pass and then hit a fierce shot that keeper Newton parried for a corner.
Boardman had a chance to get on the scoresheet herself, only to drag a shot wide from 12 yards.
Millwall looked secure defensively and when Keynsham did pose a threat, Amy Mason cleared off the line from an audacious Ana Bruni flick before keeper Claire Lacey produced a fine save.
Pru Buckley's side finally broke the deadlock after 30 minutes courtesy of a thunderous drive from Mason - her fifth goal of the campaign.
Within two minutes of the restart Millwall had doubled their tally when Boardman's cross picked out Kiobel and the latter unleashed an unstoppable strike to put the result beyond doubt.
The Lionesses created further chances to increase their tally, but were denied by some superlative saves by the Keynsham keeper.
Speaking after the match player-manager Buckley was delighted with her team's success.
"To have any chance of finishing second we had to get a win and just wait for the Barnet v Newquay result, where Barnet were favourites to win," she said.
"It is a great end to our season and is the highest position we have finished since getting relegated in 2001."
