Goalkeeper
Born: Bishops Stortford
Debut: Vs Crystal Palace 24th October 1967

Bryan Kin g, thought by most Millwall fans as The Lions best-ever
goalkeeper, was brought from non-league Chelmsford for
£2,000 in 1967. He was superbly coached by Lawrie
Leslie, the man whose place he was being groomed to
take over. King started shakily but soon settled into the
first team and rarely put a foot wrong, giving many
elegant displays in the art of goalkeeping and safe
handling. At 6ft 2in, he was always going to be sure of
cutting out dangerous crosses. He spent eight seasons
at The Den and was an ever-present for three of these,
creating a record for a Millwall  goalkeeper, of 168 consecutive Football
 League appearances.

By the time h e joined Coventry City, for £57,000 in August 1975, he held
Millwall's goalkeeping record with 302 Football
League games. Shortly after the transfer, he received
a serious injury which ended his career after only 23
First Division games. He had a benefit match at The
Den on 30th April 1976. King was once called up to
the England squad and was on the subs bench
against Portugal on 3rd April 1974. After Coventry, he
went to coach in Norway and eventually went into management there.
