Eamon Dunphy is the most capped player in Millwall's history, o btaining 22 of his 23 Republic of Ireland caps whilst with The Lions. He began his career at Manchester Utd in 1960, at the tender age of 15, but never played in the Reds' first team and in August 1965 was allowed to sign for York City. Dunphy played 22 first-team games for York, scoring three goals from his midfield position before being transferred to Millwall in January 1966, for £8,000. Although slightly built, his cheeky, impudent cleverness |
made him a favourite with the supporters, although others criticised his apparent dislike of 'getting stuck in'.

None, though, doubted his effectiveness in Millwall's midfield with his accurate passes. In an era when a single goal often won a match, he was often the final pass. Transferred to Charlton Athletic for £20,000 in December 1973. Dunphy won promotion with Charlton at the end of 1974-75, and he also went up with his next club, Reading in 1976-77. He played 44 Third Division games and scored three goals. He is the author of It's Only a Game, a book which chronicled a season in the life of Millwall FC, and also wrote a highly- acclaimed biography of the rock group, U2. It's believed |
Eamon currently resides in Dublin, where he writes for a national newspaper.
