Jimmy Constantine

Jimmy was a late starter to League football, owing to World War Two,
during which he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards in 1939 and was Jimmy Constantine
regimental welterweight boxing champion in 1940-41. In
1944, Constantine sustained concussion whilst playing
for Ashton National and, whilst in hospital, was
approached by Ted Goodier, manager of Rochdale, for
whom he signed as a professional. After three months
with Rochdale, Constantine joined Manchester City and
was top scorer at Maine Road with 29 League North and
F.A Cup goals in 1945-46. He first came into contact
with Millwall when he scored a hat-trick in City's 3-1 win at The Den in
1946-47 - on his Football League debut - and at the end of that season he
had netted 12 times in 18 games to help City win the Second Division title.

A broken ankle then side-lined him and when recovered he was transferred
to Bury in August 1947. Constantine played 32 games and scored 14 Jimmy Constantine
goals in the Second Division to become the Shakers
leading scorer. His next trip to The Den saw him score
another hat-trick, this time in Bury's 7-1 win on a snow
-covered pitch. Millwall did the obvious and signed him
in May 1948. He finished top scorer for The Lions in
three of his four seasons at New Cross. Although 28
years of age when he joined Millwall, he had not lost his
quick turn of speed nor the outstanding ability to head
some very good goals, all of which made him a favourite
with the fans, who always referred to him affectionately as 'Connie'. There was anger amongst supporters when he was allowed to leave for Tonbridge in the Kent League, even though by now he was 32 years old. Jimmy sadly died in 1998.
