Tony Cascarino

Millwall missed out on Tony when he was a youngster and eventually had
to pay around £250,000 to Gillingham to attract him back to the club he
had Tony Cascarinosupported from the terraces as a boy. Gillingham signed Cascarino as
 a 19 year-old from Crockenhill FC in January 1982, in a
strange transfer which saw some tracksuits and training
utensils go the other way. It wasn't long before he soon
took over the Gills' number ten shirt. In 1985, he won
his first full cap for the Republic of Ireland, playing
against Switzerland, Russia and Denmark whilst a Gills
player. Although he was a bustling sort of footballer,
Cascarino also had plenty of skill and his height often
made him a lethal threat in the air. He was Gillingham's
leading scorer in four of his six seasons at the Priestfield Stadium and
netted a hat-trick against Sunderland in the 1987 Third Division play-off
 semi-final.

Ultimately Gillingham failed to make it to Division Two but Cascarino did,
signing for Millwall the following month. During his three seasons at Millwall
hTony Cascarinoe became an instant hero with fans as his blossoming partnership with
Teddy Sheringham terrorised opposition defences. He
won a Second Division Championship medal in his first
season at The Den and before leaving for Aston Villa in
March 1990, for £1.5 million, he won a further 15 caps
for Eire. He continued to be capped during the World
Cup Finals in Italia '90 and USA '94. After spells at
Celtic and Chelsea, Tony signed for Marseille in 1994,
whilst they were in the Second Division. After helping
promote Marseille to the top flight, he was then transferred to another
French 1st Division side Nancy, where he still remains. He retired from the
international scene in Nov 99 at the tender age of 37 when Ireland lost out
in a European Championship Qualifying Play-Off against Turkey.
